Why invest in your intimate life now?

Why invest your time, money, and energy in your intimate life, especially now?
With everything happening in the world, it can feel like there are too many urgent problems to focus on something like your relationship.
Finances. Responsibilities. Stress. A never-ending to-do list...
But what if your intimate relationship isn’t just something you need to fit into your life?

What if it’s one of the places that helps you handle your life?
One of the foundations that supports everything else.
First, there’s your relationship with yourself: how well you know yourself, how present you are, whether you can listen to your body and actually take care of what you need.
Second, if you have a partner, there’s the relationship you have with that person.
And that relationship can become one of your biggest sources of support in adult life.
When that connection is strong, everything feels more manageable. We think more clearly, make better decisions, have more capacity for stress, and show up differently for our children, our friends, our work, and the people around us.
And there is actually quite a bit of research behind this.
A lot of us practice mindfulness, meditation, or other ways of coming back to ourselves. And I think those individual practices are incredibly valuable.
But something else becomes possible when you can do this with another person.
When you and your partner know how to come back into your bodies together.
To breathe.
To soften.
To feel.
To move out of stress and out of your heads, and back into sensation, presence, pleasure, and connection.
To enter that state of flow together.

That can become an incredibly powerful resource.
Your relationship becomes a place where you can rest.
Where you can feel seen.
Where you can feel safe and protected.
Where you can soften and be receptive.
Where you can fully feel what is happening in your body without needing to perform, fix, or accomplish anything.
It creates a kind of bubble around the two of you, not to hide from life, but to give you somewhere to restore yourselves before stepping back into it.
Because life will keep happening.
There will always be stress. There will always be uncertainty. There will always be something demanding our attention.
But having a relationship that helps you return to yourself, and having intentional practices that help you return to each other, can change the way you move through all of it.
Investing in intimacy isn’t something to do only after everything else in life is taken care of.
It may be one of the things that gives you the strength, resilience, pleasure, and connection you need to take care of everything else.
And this is really the heart of the work I do with couples.
I create spaces where you can step out of everyday life for a little while, slow down, come back into your body, and reconnect with each other in a more intentional way.
The next event, THE ART OF CONNECTED TOUCH, is coming up on August 22 in Watertown, MA.
It is a guided experiential evening exploring how attentive, conscious touch can help you slow down, notice more, communicate more clearly, and feel more connected with each other, inspired by the principles of the Wheel of Consent®.
There is nothing to perform and nothing to get “right.”
It is more about slowing down enough to notice.
What feels good.
What helps you relax.
What makes it easier to communicate.
What brings a little more ease, trust, pleasure, and connection between you.
Sometimes a relationship simply needs more room.
More attention.
More play.
More touch.
More honest conversation.
More chances to remember: we are on the same side.
And maybe the question is not, “Do we really have time for this right now?”
Maybe it is:
What else in our lives might become easier if our relationship were a place to rest, reconnect, and restore?
